Where it came from
True Polymorph was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which marked the first time the game featured a crossover with the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system. The card is a showcase frame promo, designated as number 80a, designed to capture the aesthetic of the classic D&D Monster Manuals. This particular printing utilizes a stylized, rustic art style intended to evoke the nostalgia of early tabletop gaming supplements.
The artwork for this specific iteration was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who aimed to visualize the magical transformation process central to the spell's lore. By incorporating an aged, parchment-like border and hand-drawn flourishes, the design team sought to bridge the gap between the tactical gameplay of Magic and the narrative-heavy tradition of Dungeons & Dragons. The set was generally well-received by players for its thematic fidelity to the source material and its creative use of D&D-inspired mechanics.
