Tsunami

Tsunami was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game was designed to blend the strategic depth of hobby games with the collectible nature of baseball cards. Tsunami serves as a representative example of the high-variance, powerful sorcery spells that defined the game's early identity as it sought to capture the imagination of players during the emergence of the modern trading card game genre.

The card features artwork by illustrator Quinton Hoover, known for his distinctive, vibrant style during the game's early years. Hoover's contribution to Tsunami captures a chaotic elemental scene, aligning with the designers' intent to evoke high fantasy through evocative, varied aesthetic styles. While some early cards were lauded for their artistic uniqueness, Tsunami specifically became a notable example of narrow-use card design, valued more by players for its disruptive effect against specific strategies than for its ubiquity in standard deck builds of the era.
