Provenance

Where it came from

Timetwister was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, the inaugural trading card game designed by Richard Garfield. As one of the original Power Nine—a group of cards considered the most powerful in the game's history—it was designed to disrupt gameplay by forcing both players to shuffle their hands and graveyards into their decks and draw seven new cards. This effect represented a radical departure from traditional gaming mechanics, emphasizing card advantage and resource management.

The card’s iconic illustration was created by artist Amy Weber, who provided artwork for several cards in the Alpha set. Weber’s surreal, ethereal style was meant to evoke the chaotic and temporal nature of the spell, capturing a sense of magical displacement. Upon release, the card was immediately recognized by players for its immense strategic utility, eventually becoming one of the most sought-after and collectible pieces in the history of the hobby.
