Where it came from
Tyvar the Bellicose was released in May 2023 as part of the 'March of the Machine: The Aftermath' set, an epilogue expansion for the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This card represents Tyvar Kell, an elf planeswalker from the plane of Kaldheim, following the conclusion of the Phyrexians' large-scale invasion. The card depicts a pivot for the character, transitioning him into a non-planeswalker legendary creature as the narrative explored the consequences of the Mending and the loss of planeswalker sparks.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his expressive and emotive character work. The design reflects Tyvar's identity as a warrior who values physical prowess and tribal synergy, specifically granting reach and deathtouch to other elves. Upon release, the set was noted for its experimental design structure and its focus on character-driven lore, positioning Tyvar as a key figure in the rebuilt social fabric of the multiverse.
