Where it came from
Nissa, Resurgent Animist was released in 2023 as part of the 'March of the Machine: The Aftermath' expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed as an epilogue to the expansive 'Phyrexian Arc,' focusing on the narrative consequences for iconic planeswalkers after the multiverse-wide conflict. This card specifically represents a pivotal moment for Nissa Revane as she undergoes a profound transformation, reclaiming her connection to nature following the removal of Phyrexian corruption from her spark.
The card was illustrated by Anna Steinbauer, an artist long associated with the visual identity of the Nissa Revane character. Steinbauer’s design leans into themes of rebirth and elemental harmony, utilizing a lush, verdant color palette to signify the character's restored equilibrium. Upon its release, the card was received as a mechanically significant representation of Nissa’s journey, noted by players for its synergy with elemental and legendary creature strategies in the Commander format.
