Where it came from
The Under-Construction Skyscraper originated as a playtest card featured in Mystery Booster 2, a product released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024. These cards are notable for their raw, unconventional design aesthetic, often utilizing prototype layouts and minimalist illustrations that evoke the internal development process of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It serves as a curiosity for collectors interested in the experimental mechanics and design philosophy that define the series.
The design of this card leans into the theme of urban development, consistent with its title and the humorous, high-variance nature common to the playtest set. Like other entries in the Mystery Booster 2 lineup, it was created to evoke a sense of nostalgia for early card iterations, stripping away finalized polish in favor of an authentic, work-in-progress look that highlights the creative iteration inherent in card game design.
