Where it came from
Pinchy McStingbutt was released in 2024 as part of the Mystery Booster 2 set, a supplemental Magic: The Gathering product designed to celebrate the game's history through a collection of reprinted cards and unique, experimental playtest-style designs. The card serves as a whimsical nod to the 'silver-bordered' or un-set tradition, where the game experiments with humor and unconventional mechanics that would not be functional in standard competitive play.
The card’s design features a playful, creature-centric aesthetic consistent with the lighthearted tone of playtest cards developed by Wizards of the Coast design teams. Its visual style mimics the stripped-back, developmental art often seen in internal R&D prototypes, emphasizing the charm of 'what-if' card concepts. It was received by the community as a humorous collectible that highlights the creative freedom the designers enjoy when crafting cards specifically for casual, fun-focused draft experiences.
