Provenance

Where it came from

Underworld Connections was released in 2012 as part of the Return to Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a rare black enchantment that mirrors the mechanics of the classic card Greed, allowing players to exchange life points for additional card draws. It was set within the Orzhov Syndicate, one of the ten guilds of Ravnica, which is themed around a corrupt religious and financial organization that blends church authority with banking.

The artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prominent fantasy artist known for his atmospheric and dark style. Briclot intended to capture the claustrophobic and shadowy nature of the Orzhov’s reach, depicting a figure tethered by magical chains to the underworld. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in providing card advantage in black-aligned decks, particularly in the Standard and Commander formats, where it became a staple utility piece.
