Provenance

Where it came from

Underworld Connections was originally introduced in the Return to Ravnica expansion in 2012, designed by Wizards of the Coast to reflect the gritty, bureaucratic power of the Golgari Swarm within the cityscape of Ravnica. The card mechanics allow a player to draw cards at the cost of life, representing the dangerous, illicit bargains made within the city's depths. It was specifically included in the 2014 Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska product, which highlighted the ideological and magical conflict between the blue-aligned mind mage Jace Beleren and the black-green aligned gorgon assassin Vraska.

The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy illustrator who utilized a dark, atmospheric color palette to emphasize the oppressive nature of the Ravnican underworld. The design intent was to create a sense of claustrophobia and hidden influence, matching the aesthetic of the Golgari guild. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficient utility in black-based control and midrange strategies, solidifying its place as a staple of the format for several years.
