Underworld Connections

Underworld Connections was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem in the Return to Ravnica set, later appearing in the Commander 2015 preconstructed deck Plunder the Graves. The card represents the shadowy, transactional nature of the Golgari Swarm, one of the ten iconic guilds of Ravnica, embodying their penchant for leveraging subterranean resources to gain a tactical advantage. Mechanically, it functions as a modern iteration of the classic Phyrexian Arena, utilizing a land-enchantment structure to allow players to exchange life points for card draw.

The artwork for this particular iteration was created by Kev Walker, a prolific illustrator who has contributed to the game for decades. His design captures the grim, gothic aesthetic of the Ravnican undercity, focusing on the dark pacts and visceral connectivity required to draw power from the graveyard. Upon its release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its utility in black-aligned decks, specifically those prioritizing resource management and graveyard recursion.
