Provenance

Where it came from

Unholy Strength first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a staple enchantment for black decks. By the time it was reprinted in Fifth Edition in 1997, the card had become a fundamental part of the game's early identity, representing the dark, aggressive nature of the black mana color identity through its simple yet effective stat-boosting mechanics.

The Fifth Edition version features iconic, visceral artwork by Dan Frazier. Frazier was one of the early contributors who helped define the game's dark fantasy aesthetic. His illustration for this card, depicting a shadowy figure empowered by dark forces, was intended to evoke a sense of malevolence and raw power, and it remains one of the most recognizable pieces of early Magic card art among long-time collectors.
