Upriser Renegade // Upriser Renegade

The Upriser Renegade card from the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Art Series was released in 2022 as part of a specialized subset of Magic: The Gathering. This set re-imagined the classic, high-fantasy Kamigawa plane through a cyberpunk lens, blending traditional Japanese motifs with futuristic, neon-drenched technology. These art cards were designed as non-playable promotional items meant to highlight the aesthetic evolution of the game, serving as high-quality prints of the artwork found on standard play cards.

The illustration for this piece was crafted by artist Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the fantasy illustration community known for her detailed and expressive character work. Her intent was to capture the rebellious, gritty spirit of the 'Neon Dynasty' setting, focusing on the character's functional, high-tech attire and defiant stance. The card was well-received by collectors who appreciated the focus on individual artistry, as it allowed the technical details of the digital painting to be viewed without the visual clutter of game text and mana symbols.
