Provenance

Where it came from

Upwelling first debuted in the Scourge expansion in 2003, representing a period in Magic: The Gathering history where mechanics focused on high-mana, high-impact global enchantments. The card functions by allowing players to retain their unspent mana, creating a dramatic shift in play pacing and resource management during multiplayer games.

The Tenth Edition printing, released in 2007 as a core set, updated the card with new frame technology while retaining the original illustration by Matt Cavotta. Cavotta’s artwork depicts a surreal, swirling surge of magical energy, perfectly capturing the chaotic and expansive nature of the card’s effect. The reprint was intended to provide players access to influential legacy cards within a simplified, accessible framework.
