Karplusan Forest

Karplusan Forest first appeared in the Ice Age expansion released by Wizards of the Coast in 1995, designed as part of a cycle of pain lands that allowed players to tap for one of two colors of mana at the cost of one life. The card represents the frozen, rugged region of the Karplusan mountains within the Dominaria setting, a location defined by harsh conditions and conflict. The design philosophy behind these lands was to provide mana flexibility while introducing a meaningful drawback that forced players to balance resources during the early stages of a game.

The Tenth Edition version, released in 2007, featured updated card frames and served as a core set inclusion meant to provide accessible staples for players. The art for this particular iteration was created by John Avon, a prominent illustrator known for his atmospheric landscape work for the game. His depiction of the Karplusan Forest emphasized the stark, icy isolation of the terrain, aiming to ground the mechanical utility of the card in the evocative fantasy geography that has remained a hallmark of the franchise's visual identity.
