Where it came from
Urza's Sylex was released as part of the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which focuses on the iconic conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. In the lore, the Sylex is a legendary artifact of immense destructive power, famously used by Urza to end the war at the cost of devastating the plane of Dominaria. Its inclusion in this set serves as both a narrative anchor for the history of the Multiverse and a mechanical representation of the catastrophic event known as the Sylex Blast.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who captured the artifact's ominous, monolithic aesthetic. The design team created the card to reflect its role as a world-ending device, balancing its high cost and power level with a thematic activation ability that destroys nonland permanents. Upon its release, the card saw immediate discussion within the player community for its role in both Standard gameplay and as a significant touchstone for fans invested in the long-running narrative arc of the Urza and Mishra saga.
