Uthden Troll

The Uthden Troll made its initial debut in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the quintessential green creature of the early game. Designed during the infancy of Richard Garfield’s trading card system, the creature was intended to showcase the regenerative capabilities iconic to green-aligned forest dwellers. By the time it appeared in the Fourth Edition in 1995, the card had become a staple of the game’s core identity, serving as a reliable defensive tool that forced opponents to manage their mana efficiently to bypass its self-healing mechanics.

The distinctive artwork for the card was created by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists whose work defined the dark, gritty, and often surreal aesthetic of the game's earliest sets.
