Provenance

Where it came from

The Uthden Troll was originally introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's initial foray into high-fantasy creature design. The card was created during the early stages of the trading card game explosion, designed by Richard Garfield to emphasize the importance of creature-based combat and regenerative mechanics in the burgeoning green color identity.

The artwork for this version was provided by Douglas Shuler, one of the original illustrators for the game. Shuler’s depiction of the troll focuses on a grounded, classic fantasy aesthetic, utilizing traditional ink and paint techniques that defined the visual language of early Magic. The card was reprinted in the Fourth Edition in 1995 to keep pace with the game's growing popularity and to provide new players access to foundational mechanics.
