Karma

Karma was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's early focus on color-specific mechanics. As a white enchantment, it was designed to punish players utilizing black-aligned decks, reflecting the game's core philosophy of the color pie where white often serves as the antithesis to black’s focus on death and decay. The Fourth Edition printing, released in 1995, features the classic card frame that defined the game's aesthetics during its initial growth period.

The artwork for this iteration was rendered by Quinton Hoover, a prominent illustrator during the game's formative years. Hoover was known for his lyrical, flowing style that provided a distinct visual identity to early Magic cards, departing from the more gritty fantasy tropes of the time. The design sought to visually communicate the concept of karmic retribution, and while the card's mechanics have become less impactful in modern iterations of the game, it remains a recognizable artifact of the mid-1990s trading card era.
