Where it came from
Valentin, Dean of the Vein // Lisette, Dean of the Root was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card features a double-faced design, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the dual nature of its magically-inclined students and faculty. As a card from the Strixhaven set, it represents the Witherbloom College, which emphasizes the interplay between biology, life, and death.
The artwork was illustrated by Ryan Pancoast, who sought to capture the distinct aesthetic of the Witherbloom dean. The design utilizes a shared mana cost structure to allow the card to function as either a black-aligned creature focusing on life gain and drainage or a green-aligned creature emphasizing creature augmentation. Upon its release, the card was noted for its versatility in the Commander format, where players appreciated its ability to toggle between offensive and defensive board states.
