Where it came from
Valentin, Dean of the Vein // Lisette, Dean of the Root was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a double-faced legendary creature set at the Silverquill college, which focuses on the magic of words and the balance between light and shadow. Mechanically, the card allows players to switch between an aggressive life-gain strategy and a supportive power-boosting ability, reflecting the duality of its design within the set’s academic theme.
The card was illustrated by artist Billy Christian, who worked to capture the sharp, academic aesthetic of the Silverquill campus. The design leans into the high-contrast visual style prevalent in the set, emphasizing the elegant yet dangerous nature of the characters. Upon its release, it became a notable figure in Commander format play, where players appreciated the versatility of having both offensive and defensive options on a single card.
