Where it came from
Valentin, Dean of the Vein originated as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. The card is a double-faced creature representing the Witherbloom College, which focuses on the intersection of biology and death magic. The Art Series version specifically showcases the larger, borderless illustration created for the set, intended to highlight the gothic, academic aesthetic of the school.
The artwork for this piece was crafted by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the fantasy gaming space known for her precise, atmospheric character designs. Her work on this card leans into the dark, scholarly nature of the character, emphasizing the vampire dean's elegance and predatory posture. Upon its release, the Strixhaven Art Series was well-received by collectors for providing a cleaner, textless canvas that allows the artist’s technical skill to take center stage without the interference of game mechanics.
