Where it came from
Vanguard of Brimaz was released in 2014 as part of the Born of the Gods expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common creature card, it was designed to support the set's focus on the Theros block’s Greek mythology-inspired themes, specifically the heroic deeds and divine interactions associated with the leonin leader Brimaz, King of Oreskos.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who captured the stoic, disciplined aesthetic of the Oreskos leonin warriors. Within the game's competitive landscape, the card functioned as a low-cost utility unit, intended to provide strategic defensive value in Limited formats. While not a cornerstone of tournament play, it is recognized by collectors as a distinct piece of the lore-rich Theros setting.
