Where it came from
Vanguard of the Restless was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander decks in 2021. Designed for the Witherbloom Witchcraft deck, the card features the distinct aesthetic of the Witherbloom college, which focuses on the duality of life and death, nature and decay. The card mechanics encourage players to utilize the graveyard, reflecting the gothic-academic atmosphere of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse's premier magical university.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrative artist Jason Rainville. In his depiction, Rainville captures the decaying yet vibrant essence of the Witherbloom aesthetic, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between fungal growth and necromancy. Upon its release, the card was well-received by Commander players for its synergy with graveyard-focused strategies and its contribution to the unique flavor identity of the Witherbloom faction.
