Where it came from
Vanguard of Brimaz was originally released in the Born of the Gods expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2014. The card was designed to highlight the Leonin civilization of Theros, a plane deeply inspired by Greco-Roman mythology. As a creature card, it was crafted to reflect the disciplined and militaristic nature of the cat-folk loyal to Brimaz, King of Oreskos, specifically utilizing the heroic mechanic to reward players for targeting their own creatures with spells.
The artwork was illustrated by Lucas Graciano, who focused on capturing the stoic, protective stance of a frontline soldier. The card later appeared as a reprint on 'The List,' a curated selection of cards from throughout the game's history that can be found in modern Set Boosters. Its inclusion in this format serves as a way to integrate older, thematic pieces into contemporary play environments, maintaining the aesthetic continuity of the original Theros setting.
