Where it came from
Veteran Warleader was released in 2015 as part of the promotional suite for the Magic: The Gathering expansion Battle for Zendikar. This specific card, identified by the collector number 221s, features the unique 'planeswalker stamp' foil treatment reserved for prerelease promotional items, designed to distinguish these cards from standard set versions during local tournament events.
The art was rendered by Igor Kieryluk, whose work frequently defined the rugged, adventurous aesthetic of the Zendikar plane. The card’s design focused on the 'Ally' creature type, a synergy-heavy mechanic central to the set's narrative of factions uniting to repel the otherworldly Eldrazi threat. It was received by players as a flexible utility piece, valued for its ability to adapt its combat prowess based on the number of creatures under its controller's command.
