Where it came from
The Vexilus Praetor was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This collaborative release marked a significant intersection between the deep lore of Games Workshop’s tabletop universe and the mechanics of Wizards of the Coast’s trading card game. The card features art by Igor Kieryluk, who was tasked with translating the imposing aesthetic of the Adeptus Custodes into the visual language of Magic, focusing on the character's role as a standard-bearer for the Emperor of Mankind.
The design of the card emphasizes themes of protection and leadership, consistent with the tabletop role of the Vexilus Praetor as a force multiplier for Custodian units. Within the context of the Commander format, the card was received as a utility piece for decks utilizing white mana, praised for its ability to provide static defensive buffs. The holographic star symbol denotes its inclusion in the premium collector’s editions of the deck, which utilized specialized foil treatments to appeal to enthusiasts of both hobby communities.
