Where it came from
The Vexilus Praetor was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This collaborative deck series emerged from a partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to bridge the gap between the tabletop wargame's rich sci-fi lore and the mechanics of the Commander format. The inclusion of the Imperium of Man faction was intended to capture the aesthetic of the Adeptus Custodes, the Emperor's elite bodyguards, emphasizing their role as symbols of hope and unwavering loyalty on the battlefield.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, who focused on rendering the intricate, gold-plated power armor and the iconic vexilla banner central to the character's design. The artwork leans into the high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the 40k universe, utilizing stark lighting to highlight the unit's imposing stature. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic ability to grant protective buffs to other units, effectively translating the tabletop unit’s aura of invulnerability into a functional board presence.
