Where it came from
Vexing Bauble was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed specifically for the Modern format, the set was curated to introduce powerful new tools and reprints that impact high-level competitive play. As a zero-cost artifact that replaces itself upon being cast, the card serves as a tactical hedge against free spell strategies, forcing players to manage their mana resources more carefully in the early game.
The card’s illustration was handled by artist Wisnu Tan, who captured the item’s unsettling, magical essence through a focus on intricate, glowing details and a distinct, otherworldly aesthetic. Within the player community, the card was immediately recognized for its efficiency and its dual-purpose role as both a cantrip and a tempo-disruption tool, quickly becoming a staple in various deck lists aiming to stabilize against aggressive strategies.
