What it does

This spell can't be countered.

This creature gets +3/+3 as long as no opponent controls a creature.

As the Mirari's mutating effects grew out of control, centaurs and druids fled—but insects swarmed closer.

Provenance

Where it came from

Vexing Beetle was released in February 2003 as part of the Legions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was unique within the Onslaught block for being composed entirely of creature cards, a design choice intended to emphasize the tribal mechanics and creature-focused gameplay that defined the era. The card was created to provide a specialized utility creature for green decks, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield by moving +1/+1 counters between creatures.

The artwork was provided by the illustrator Thomas M. Baxa, whose signature style often incorporates dark, visceral biological themes. In this illustration, Baxa depicted the creature with a focus on its unsettling, insectoid anatomy, reflecting the set's broader exploration of the morph mechanic and the strange, evolving nature of creatures on the plane of Otaria. Upon release, the card was generally viewed as a niche tactical piece, appreciated more for its specific interaction with counter-based strategies than for broad competitive dominance.
