Where it came from
Vexing Devil was originally released in the 2012 set Avacyn Restored, designed as a high-risk, high-reward creature for aggressive red decks. It was conceived by Wizards of the Coast to create a 'punisher' mechanic, where the opponent must choose between taking four damage or dealing with a very efficient one-mana creature. This design philosophy aimed to test an opponent's decision-making under pressure, making it a polarizing but memorable card in the history of Magic: The Gathering.
The art for this specific printing in Innistrad Remastered retains the evocative gothic horror aesthetic that defines the plane of Innistrad. The design team for the remaster focused on curating iconic cards that capture the set’s unique atmosphere, ensuring that Vexing Devil remained a centerpiece for players who favor direct damage strategies. It is widely regarded by the community as a quintessential red card, reflecting the chaotic and volatile spirit of the game's fire magic.
