Provenance

Where it came from

The Vexing Puzzlebox was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. This set was designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Commander format, emphasizing the chaotic and whimsical nature of the tabletop game's magical artifacts.

The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who utilized a clean, digital aesthetic to depict the artifact as a complex, glowing cube. Mechanically, the design leans into the theme of unpredictability, forcing players to roll dice and draw cards in a way that reflects the volatile nature of magical puzzles found within Baldur's Gate lore.
