Vexing Gull

Vexing Gull was released in early 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the top-down design of Greek mythology, reimagining the plane of Theros after the events of the previous block. As a common-rarity creature, the card was intended to provide functional support for limited play formats, fitting into the set's blue-aligned themes of enchantment synergy and maritime aesthetics.

The card features artwork by illustrator Yeong-Hao Han, who depicted the creature within the distinct, dreamlike visual style characteristic of the Theros plane. The design emphasizes the fantastical, slightly uncanny nature of the Nyx-touched creatures found in this setting, aiming to evoke the sense of divine intervention common in the mythology that inspired the expansion. Upon release, the card was received as a standard utility piece, appreciated by players for its role in enabling specific mechanics within draft and sealed deck environments.
