Where it came from
The Wizards of Thay card was released as part of the 2022 Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed as a thematic successor to the original Commander Legends, focusing on the iconic Dungeons & Dragons setting of the Forgotten Realms. The card specifically draws from the lore of the Red Wizards of Thay, a powerful and malevolent organization of necromancers and magi known for their influence in the region of Thay.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. His design aims to capture the sinister, academic, and authoritative presence typical of the Red Wizards, utilizing dark, intricate robes and a focus on magical research. Within the game, the card serves as a legendary enchantment that rewards players for casting spells from their graveyard, reflecting the dark necromantic traditions associated with its namesake faction.
