Where it came from
Vicious Rivalry was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Secrets of Strixhaven, a supplemental product themed around the magical university of Strixhaven. The card was designed to highlight the intense competitive atmosphere between the school's various colleges, embodying the mechanical flavor of player-versus-player conflict that defines the set's identity.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a vivid color palette and dynamic composition to capture the essence of a magical duel. The piece was well-received by the player base for its evocative portrayal of the university's arcane tensions, aligning with the broader aesthetic goals of the Strixhaven expansion to create a collegiate, high-fantasy narrative experience.
