Where it came from
Vicious Rivalry was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to reflect the competitive nature of the game’s academic setting, specifically emphasizing the bitter conflict between the Prismari and Silverquill colleges. Mechanically, it functions as a sorcery that highlights the themes of rivalry and resource depletion inherent to the set’s blue and black color identity.
The artwork for this card was provided by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed and expressive character work. Her visual approach aimed to capture the intensity of a magical duel between students, focusing on the tension and spellcasting energy typical of the Strixhaven environment. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set, appreciated by players for how effectively the art and mechanics communicated the lore of the academy.
