Where it came from
Vicious Rivalry was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages promotional set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card represents a core narrative conflict within the Strixhaven University setting, specifically highlighting the philosophical and magical tension between the university's competing colleges. It was designed to emphasize the theme of rivalry inherent in the set's dual-color faction structure.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and expressive style to capture the intense magical clash between two mages. Voss aimed to convey a sense of kinetic energy and high-stakes competition through vibrant colors and fluid composition. Upon release, the card was well-received by players and collectors, particularly for its distinct promotional art treatment, which elevated the card's visual appeal compared to its standard set counterpart.
