Where it came from
Vindictive Lich was originally introduced in the Commander 2017 set as part of the Graveborn themed deck. Its inclusion in Commander Masters, identified as card number 525, serves as a high-profile reprint of the rare creature, allowing players to access the card for black-aligned graveyard-recursion strategies. The card is designed to punish opponents through a modal enter-the-battlefield trigger that scales with the number of players, making it a functional staple in multiplayer formats.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Johannes Voss. Known for his atmospheric and often melancholic style within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, Voss focused on the Lich’s menacing, skeletal silhouette to emphasize its role as a harbinger of decay. The design was received favorably by the Commander community, as the card offers a balanced mix of defensive utility and aggressive political pressure during complex table states.
