Lore

Why it matters

As a rare card from this collection, the Vindictive Lich acts as a powerful deterrent on the table by punishing opponents who dare to challenge it. Its ability to strip resources from those who remove it ensures that your opponents must carefully weigh the cost of their aggression before acting.

Provenance

Where it came from

Vindictive Lich was originally introduced as a mythic rare in the Commander 2017 anthology, designed to serve as a powerful defensive and attrition-based tool for black-aligned graveyard decks. The card reflects the quintessential design philosophy of the Commander format, focusing on multiplayer dynamics by forcing opponents to choose between discarding cards, sacrificing permanents, or losing life, which encourages table-wide interaction.

The version from Commander Masters, featuring artwork by Wisnutanu Sasongko, maintains the macabre, high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the set's premium reprints. This iteration was released as part of a curated collection designed to provide players with access to staple cards, with the art style emphasizing the Lich's imposing, skeletal presence and its role as a strategic hurdle for opponents to overcome.
