Where it came from
Virtue of Persistence // Locthwain Scorn was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in 2023, drawing inspiration from classic European fairy tales and folklore. The card was designed as a Rare Enchantment Saga, part of a cycle of Virtues that mirror the enchantment-focused themes of the plane. Its creation was intended to provide players with a versatile dual-function card that serves as both a removal spell and a recurring reanimation engine.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the dark and gothic essence of the Eldraine setting. By focusing on the juxtaposition of the decay represented by Locthwain Scorn and the enduring, life-draining nature of the Virtue, the design successfully highlights the set's duality of whimsical charm and menacing undertones. Upon release, it was well-received for its strategic utility in Commander and Standard formats, where it quickly became a staple for black-aligned control decks.
