Where it came from
Virtue of Persistence // Locthwain Scorn was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in 2023, drawing on the thematic intersection of classic fairy tales and the high-fantasy mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. As an enchantment in the Virtue cycle, it reflects the set's focus on storybook motifs, specifically drawing inspiration from tales involving curses and eternal slumbers. The card was designed to offer players a dual-function experience, providing both a targeted removal spell and a recurring graveyard-reanimation engine that stabilizes the game state over time.
The promotional variant, identified by collector number 115p, features an aesthetic shift from the standard card frame, often incorporating unique art treatments specific to the set's collector-focused releases. Wizards of the Coast art directors coordinated these designs to evoke the whimsical yet dark tone of Eldraine, utilizing a distinct illustrative style that contrasts the ethereal nature of the enchantment with the harsh, pragmatic utility of the Locthwain Scorn spell. The design was well-received by the competitive community for its versatility, marking it as a staple in control-oriented deck archetypes.
