Where it came from
Visions of Dread was released in 2021 as part of the Coven Counters Commander deck for the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion. This set marked a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on the balance between human survivors and the supernatural forces threatening them. The card was designed as a sorcery that rewards players for managing the size of their opponents' boards, fitting the set's thematic emphasis on lingering dread and the mechanical archetype of black-green graveyard and token synergy.
The artwork for this piece was created by illustrator Manuel Castañón, whose contribution helps define the eerie, atmospheric aesthetic of modern Innistrad. His work focuses on capturing the visceral, unsettling nature of the setting, utilizing lighting and shadows to evoke the classic tropes of supernatural horror. Upon its release, the card was received as a situational but effective removal tool, particularly noted for its ability to scale in multiplayer Commander games where board states frequently expand.
