Vivien, Nature's Avenger

Vivien, Nature's Avenger was released in 2019 as a part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific card was designed as a thematic centerpiece for the set's themed Planeswalker deck, serving as a dedicated build-around card for players focused on green-aligned strategies involving creatures and land ramp. It occupies a unique space in the set's architecture, functioning as a planeswalker card that is legally playable only within the context of the introductory deck ecosystem, distinguishing it from the standard booster-pack rare version of the character.

The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who has been a prominent illustrator for the franchise for several years. Her depiction of Vivien Reid was intended to capture the character's fierce, protective connection to the natural world, emphasizing her role as an archer and guardian of wilderness. The design received modest attention upon release, as it provided a highly accessible, albeit mechanically simplified, entry point for new players to engage with the Planeswalker card type, reflecting the broader initiative of the Core Set 2020 to lower barriers to entry for newcomers.
