Where it came from
The Vizier of Tumbling Sands was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced players to a desert-themed plane inspired by Ancient Egypt, characterized by trial-based society and the looming influence of the dragon-god Nicol Bolas. Mechanically, the card explores the 'cycling' keyword, a returning mechanic that allows players to discard cards to draw new ones, reflecting the shifting, unstable nature of the desert landscape.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Magali Villeneuve, who sought to capture the ethereal, sand-bound nature of the Vizier. Her design features flowing fabrics and intricate gold adornments typical of the aesthetic direction for the Amonkhet block, which emphasized a contrast between the harsh, golden sun and the oppressive, mysterious monuments. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile utility piece in various formats, appreciated for its ability to affect the battlefield from the graveyard.
