Volcanic Hammer was originally introduced in the Portal Second Age set and was later reprinted in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005. As a sorcery that deals three damage to a target creature or player, it functioned as a staple red burn spell during its tenure in standard play, providing a reliable and straightforward method for players to manage the board or reduce an opponent's life total.

The Ninth Edition illustration was created by Ben Thompson, who captured the visceral, elemental nature of the spell through a depiction of erupting subterranean force.
