Provenance

Where it came from

Yavimaya Coast was originally introduced in the 2000 set Invasion, designed as part of a cycle of allied-color pain lands that allowed players to tap for one of two colors at the cost of one life. These lands became staples of competitive play for their efficiency in mana fixing, providing a flexible backbone for multi-colored decks that required reliable resource management.

The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005 as part of the core set, featured updated artwork by Anthony S. Waters. Waters, a frequent contributor to the game, utilized his signature style to depict the lush, organic, and slightly foreboding landscape of the Yavimaya forest. The piece was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, which helped ground the abstract mechanics of mana production in the established lore of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
