Where it came from
Volcanic Island was first released in the 1993 Alpha set as part of the original cycle of dual lands. The Collectors' Edition, released in late 1993, served as a non-tournament-legal promotional set intended to showcase the game's artwork and mechanics to collectors. These cards are distinguished by their square corners and a gold-foil back, making them a high-quality display piece that maintains the original aesthetic of the game's earliest printings.
The card features iconic landscape illustration by artist Christopher Rush, who was instrumental in establishing the early visual language of the game. His depiction of the Volcanic Island aimed to capture the stark, elemental danger of a land that simultaneously produces two disparate colors of mana. While these editions were not permitted in sanctioned play due to their distinct card backs, they are highly regarded today for their faithful reproduction of Rush’s foundational design work and their role in the history of trading card game collectibility.
