Volcanic Island

The 30th Anniversary Edition Volcanic Island was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to commemorate three decades of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed as a non-tournament legal celebration, recreating iconic cards from the original Limited Edition Alpha and Beta releases, which were first printed in 1993. The project aimed to provide long-term collectors and players with a high-quality, nostalgic reproduction of cards that have become exceedingly rare and costly over the last thirty years.

The artwork for this specific edition retains the original illustration by Brian Snõddy, a foundational artist for the game whose early work defined the aesthetic of the series. Snõddy’s original design for Volcanic Island sought to evoke a primordial, elemental landscape, balancing the dual nature of the land as both mountain and island through a stark, classic fantasy style. While the 30th Anniversary Edition cards feature a modern frame and a distinct back design to differentiate them from the originals, they are widely regarded as a faithful tribute to Snõddy's seminal contribution to the game's visual identity.
