Where it came from
Volcanic Torrent was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. The card was designed for the Prismari Performance deck, which centers on the Prismari College of Strixhaven University, an institution dedicated to the fusion of elemental magic and artistic expression. The design intent reflects this identity through the 'cascade' mechanic, which rewards players for casting high-mana spells with a burst of chaotic, secondary magical effects.
The artwork was illustrated by Games Workshop veteran and fantasy artist Greg Staples. Tasked with capturing the aesthetic of Prismari magic—described as explosive, performance-based wizardry—Staples utilized a vibrant palette of magentas and cyans to depict a deluge of elemental energy. Upon release, the card was received as a functional and flavorful utility piece within the Commander format, praised by players for its ability to clear board states while simultaneously generating additional value for the caster.
