Where it came from
Ajani's Chosen was originally introduced in the 2013 Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2014. The card features the character Ajani Goldmane, a leonin planeswalker, and is designed to reward players for casting enchantment spells by creating a 2/2 white Cat Soldier creature token. Its inclusion in the 2021 Secrets of Strixhaven Commander set reflects Wizards of the Coast's ongoing strategy of reprinting cards with synergistic utility to support specific deck archetypes, particularly those focused on enchantment-heavy playstyles.
The card's illustration by Aleksi Briclot captures the essence of Ajani's bond with his kin and his role as a protector within the multiverse. Briclot, a prolific contributor to the game's aesthetic, utilized a dynamic composition to emphasize the character's strength and the magical manifestation of the feline warriors he summons. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for 'go-wide' strategies in Commander, consistently valued by players for its reliable token generation and flavorful connection to the lore of the leonin people.
