What it does
Banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)
Cumulative upkeep 1 generic mana (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

Where it came from
Volunteer Reserves was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight set, the final expansion in the Mirage block for Magic: The Gathering. This set is notable in the game's history for advancing the complex narrative of the Weatherlight Saga, introducing key characters and plot points that would define the game's lore for years to come. The card itself represents the mobilization of the citizens of Benalia, reflecting the set's focus on the tension between the plane of Dominaria and the encroaching forces of Phyrexia.
The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Kaja Foglio, whose distinctive, painterly style was a hallmark of the game's mid-nineties aesthetic. Foglio’s design captures a sense of organized, communal defense, moving away from the solitary hero tropes common in earlier fantasy art to emphasize the collective effort of the townspeople. While the card is a common-rarity utility piece often utilized in limited gameplay formats of its era, it remains a recognized example of the visual storytelling that established the identity of the Weatherlight expansion.
