Where it came from
Infernal Tribute was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents a period in the game's history when mechanics often centered on sacrifice and resource conversion, reflecting the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic established by the expansion's narrative arc involving the crew of the skyship Weatherlight.
The card’s haunting illustration was crafted by artist Mark Poole, whose work is characterized by a dreamlike, painterly quality. Poole sought to visually translate the concept of a sinister pact, using somber tones to evoke the gravity of the card's effect, which allows players to draw cards at the cost of sacrificing permanents. Upon its release, it became a point of interest for players who favored black-aligned control strategies, valued for its utility in grinding out incremental card advantage.
